Thanks for writing in, Justin, and for reminding me that there are ways of combining many roles, some of which--if I may paraphrase Shakespeare here--that have not been dreamt of in my philosophy. I hope we get to see those ways. Stay in touch.

"This is a great thread. As an artist and a curator and a gallery director, I obviously am in the multiple hats camp. And I do work to keep them separate. However, my I believe in investigating the context of each and thereby coming up with exhibition structures that blend all of these. Allan Kaprow is one of my heroes, and he asked the question: how can we completely destroy the audience without canceling the concert. His response was the happening in which the viewer's presence would necessitate/presuppose participation and thus inherently turn audience into a performer.

When I began working in conceptual terms and creating event-based exhibitions at The Garage Biennale (now defunct), I did just that; created scores for time-based experiences and called them art shows. This lead me to my MFA in New Genres art at SFAI and to SOMArts as their curator and gallery director. I staunchly believe in taking all those hats and redesigning them so they are all worn simultaneously but depending on your vantage point, never resemble any single one.

Now, I also admit there are plenty of times I don't show my artwork in the shows I curate. In fact this is the norm and it is very rare that I present myself. This turn of phrase even evidences the often self-serving nature of this practice. Nevertheless, there are many ways that my artistic practice can penetrate the gallery space in conjunction with events and installations and in that way continue to blur the line.

In conclusion I believe that interrogating the context of exhibitonary practice is the way that one can meld one's conceptual art practice, one's curatorial practice with the burdens and privileges of directorship."
