Hi Seth, I just stumbled across this thread. I actually live in Puerto Rico and I do agree with James that there are other artists worthy of attention on the island apart from the above mentioned artists. It seems the international scene has focused on them when there is much more to see here. I am a freelance arts and culture writer based in San Juan, and have written about other artists and would like to recommend these names to you. if you would like to know more about them, please contact me.

I think that these artists are waaaaaaaay over-rated. who ever writes there essays are just charging there work with so much political nuances that it just doesnt match the visual work. its sad to know that they are far more interesiting artists living in puerto rico and being the fact that they live so distant from the whole art scene that they are ignored. move over wannabees let the real ones come through.

If you can translate this review from a Puertorican publication called FGA Box Score, you'll notice it might be the only harsh critical view on Allora Calzadilla's work. Strange how everything they make is loved by art critics?! (Click name to link to the review)

"universal brotherhood", i feel the work doesn't need this phrase. At most there might be too much political discussion forced on the piece.

I've read up on better work coming from this couple.

When entering the Gladstone gallery that opening night, there was too much expectation from the paid 'gallery walk rounds', showing signs of shh shhh please be quite this is a performance'. It's all the same to me at least. To think of a live action verses a staged reenactment of beauty and the beast in high school drama class is the same to me. We should know or shouldn't to be quite for any live action, or to ignore it if it doesn't interest us. Maybe the noise from the crowd could have been part of the piece, or maybe the control from the gallery projecting 'pay attention everyone' could or was part of the it. I question the participation from the gallery, or if this was noted at all or was just a controlled thing from Gladstone.

I'm suspicious about there being too much paradox, and meaning to get the piece across the public. Would it be different if "musical composition has long symbolized human fraternity and universal brotherhood...", and "the relationships between composition and meaning..." make the work more alive or more meaningful?
