The comment has been very poignant, however I think that pigeonholing Gispert's work as referential to MIAMI, demeans the whole oeuvre. Gispert uses icons and references which are intentionally valid to all societies where the banal, artificial and powerful are impinging on the primitive and underprivileged. His backgrounds depict L.A., Brooklyn, archeological sites etc. His main character in "Smother" is obviously chicano-not a cuban-american. Boomboxes are iconic of many ethnic or cultural trends. The graffiti depicted in "History Will Absolve Me" are superimposed images he has collected in Israel, California, the West Bank to name a few. Miami just happens to be one of those societies he uses as counterpoint.
